Appel à participation : "Video Editing with Open Source Tools", Handbook, folly, Lancaster, United Kingdom.

folly, a leading digital arts organisation working in the Northwest of England and online, is looking to commission an article on "Video Editing with Open Source Tools" for the Digital Artists' Handbook.

http://www.digitalartistshandbook.org

The Digital Artists' Handbook is an up to date, reliable and accessible source of information that introduces artists to different tools, resources and ways of working related to digital art.

The goal of the Handbook is to be a signpost for tools, resources, and methods. A source of practical information and content that bridges the gap between new users and the platforms and resources that are available, but not always very accessible. The Handbook will be slowly filled with articles written by invited artists and specialists, talking about their tools and ways of working. Articles can take the shape of introductions to tools, as well as descriptions of methodologies and technologies.

When discussing software, the focus of this Handbook is on Free/Libre Open Source Software. The Handbook aims to give artists information about the available tools but also about the practicalities related to Free Software and Open Content, such as collaborative development and licenses. All this to facilitate exchange between artists, to take away some of the fears of artists when it comes to open content licenses, sharing code, and allowing them to have a look at various ways of working and collaborating. The focus is on practical consequences, not on political implications.

The Handbook was launched in March 2008. A number of articles were commissioned for this launch, including introductions to all the main handbook sections. One area we are seeking to increase the depth of content in is "Working with Digital Video", and we are looking for someone to write an article on the topic of "Video Editing with Open Source Tools". An introduction to "Working with Digital Video" has been published at www.digitalartistshandbook.org/node/28. We would like the article to pick up on the ideas introduced in the final paragraph of the introduction, using a number of tools in way of examples:

"When you start working with free software as a videomaker, it is likely that you need to invest some time and energy in understanding certain basics of the video production process. Sometimes this might mean you have to look for alternative workflows, to dive 'under the hood' of a digital tool, or reconfigure an existing solution to suit your needs. Investigating the tools you use as a video maker is an important part of the job, it can help gain insights, it can be an inspiration to explore new ways of working and imagemaking." Peter Westenberg, Working with Digital Video, Digital Artists' Handbook, October 2007

A fee of £185 ex VAT is available to the writer of the "Video Editing with Open Source Tools" article.

For further information please email jennifer.stoddart 'at' folly.co.uk or call +44 (0)1524 388550

The deadline for expressions of interest is Friday 18th July 2008, 5.30pm BST. Expressions of interest should be sent by email to Jennifer Stoddart.

Dossier «FRAGILE» :: esse arts + opinions

esse arts + opinions numéro 65
Date de tombée : 10 septembre 2008

APPEL DE TEXTES / CALL FOR PAPERS

Appel à participation : "Let's fuck, not fight!", wltf-mag, online magazine, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

What is WLTF?

Is a publication and an online project. I call it a magazine, but prefer to use it in inverted commas "magazine", because it is more than that, but I couldn't find a good enough term that could encompass everything, so magazine seemed like a good enough way to describe it.

"Let's fuck, not fight!"

--------------------------------------------------------

"Let's fuck, not fight!" Is the cry of WLTF #1 and has been thought as an update on the "Make love, not war!" motto of the flower-power generation as well as homage to the uprisings of 68. During the past decades we have witnessed the death of idealism, new generations no longer seem to want to change the world - have we conformed? I hope not. We can still do it, and why not do it through sex?

Appel à participation : Art & Climat, nouvel appel à contribution - Environment 2.0: Through Cracks in the Pavement, Manchester, United Kingdom.

Environment 2.0: Through Cracks in the Pavement

Leonardo Guest Editor: Drew Hemment

The second call for papers of the Leonardo special project
Lovely Weather: Artists and Scientists on the Cultural
Context of Climate Change seeks new cross-disciplinary
thinking on sustainability in urban environments, with a
focus on creative intervention, social change and
non-Western perspectives.

In urban environments we are separated from the consequences
of our actions as surely as the tarmac of the road cuts us
off from the earth beneath. This physical boundary
encourages a phenomenological separation. It is also a
symptom and a driver of a global reliance on the private car
and fossil fuel. But between the cracks in the pavement,
another world flourishes---local activism, recycling,
environmental collectives, permaculture, urban gardening.

Artistic and social projects can widen the cracks in the
pavements. Such creative innovations might be artworks,
social entrepreneurship, scientific intervention or
innovations that harness everyday creativity. They might
seek to decode the complex relationships between people,
nature and technology in urban settings. Or they might be
conceived as interventions that can help contribute to
profound social change, or suggest alternative possibilities
for or critical perspectives on sustainability.

A new relationship is emerging as computing migrates into
the environment. When the Earth is mapped, tagged and
digitized, it ceases to be inert raw material and becomes
instead navigable, computable and manipulable. How will this
affect the way that industrial societies have viewed the
environment as a resource to be exploited and tamed?

Leonardo is soliciting texts that document the works of
artists, researchers, and scholars involved in the
exploration of sustainability in urban environments. Themes
and issues may include:

• Sustainability in urban environments
• Ubiquitous, pervasive, locative and mobile communication
technology
• Growing community
• Sowing seeds of social change.

Linked activity includes an Urban Climate Camp forum at
ISEA2008 in Singapore in August 2008, and an exhibition and
workshop at Futuresonic 2009 in Manchester, U.K., during May

Appel à participation : 6TH ASIA-EUROPE ART CAMP, Singapore, Singapore.

CALL FOR APPLICATION

6TH ASIA-EUROPE ART CAMP:
Ludic Times | The Art of Gaming
22 29 July 2008
Singapore

Deadline: 28 May 2008

The Asia-Europe Art Camp project is an initiative set up by Asia-Europe
Foundation (ASEF) in 2003 focusing on New Media Art. The project aims at
developing a platform to promote dialogue between art students from Asia and
Europe, to learn more about each other¹s contexts, cultures and be inspired
during a week of lectures, workshops and public events. Focusing more on the
creative process than on the ³artistic product², the Art Camp has been
designed as a learning experience and an opportunity for professional
development.

Built upon the achievements of the previous five Art Camps, the 6th Art Camp
will gather 20 young artists or students, usually in their final year of
study, from ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) countries for an intensive week of
workshops, lectures and meetings as well as artistic and collaborative work.
A team of Asia-Europe artistic advisors and resource persons specialised in
art and technology will lead and facilitate the workshops during the Art
Camp.

On the sidelines of the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA)
2008 and the Asia-Europe New Media Arts Policy and Practice Meeting, the 6th
Asia-Europe Art Camp to be held in Singapore is conceptualised around the
theme of gaming and will focus on the nature of our contemporary ludic
culture while taking into account psychology of gaming and theories of
gaming (as tools for social development and awareness, real-life situation
simulations, artificial and augmented realities, serious games for education
and games as an art form). Electronic, internet-based and pervasive games
and their roles in urban society will be discussed as well as the
possibilities for Asia-Europe game development collaborations and
industry-artist-researcher partnerships.

Objectives
· To give participants the opportunity of an international, cultural and
artistic learning experience and professional development by meeting up with
renowned game art experts from Asia and Europe.
· To provide participants with a genuine exposure on the development of new
media arts in Asia and Europe especially by giving unique opportunities to
participate actively in the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA)
2008 and the Asia-Europe New Media Arts Policy and Practice Meeting.
· To encourage and support any promising collaboration between participants
prior and after the Art Camp.

Activities & Process

Online Platform
An online platform will be activated a month before the Art Camp to allow
the selected participants to initiate communication with one other before
they meet physically.

Lectures | Workshop | Project work
A team of experts including animators, software developers, artists and
researchers will present various presentations served to explore certain

Organisers

The 6th Asia-Europe Art Camp is organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation in
partnership with the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) 2008.

· Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) seeks to promote better mutual understanding
and closer cooperation between the people of Asia and Europe through greater
intellectual, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges. These exchanges
include conferences, lecture tours, workshops, seminars and the use of
web-based platforms. Established in February 1997 by the partners of the
Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), ASEF works in partnership with other public
institutions and civil society actors to ensure its work is broad-based and
balanced among the partner countries. http://www.asef.org

The Cultural Exchange Department (CE) of ASEF seeks to provide young artists
and cultural professionals with a unique environment for dialogue that can
evolve into positive artistic interventions, dynamic cultural networks and
cultural policy development in and between Asia and Europe. CE¹s areas of
co-operation are young artists¹ exchange (new media, photography, dance and
music), process oriented platforms and networks (museums, independent cinema
and autonomous cultural centres), dialogue on policy and culture, and a
vision for an Asia-Europe Cultural Portal (Culture360).

· International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA), initiated in 1988, is
the world¹s premier media arts event for the critical discussion and
showcase of creative productions applying new technologies in interactive
and digital media. Held biannually in various cities throughout the world,
this migratory event is being held in Asia for the second time in its
history, after Singapore successfully secured this bid.
ISEA 2008 will consist of an internationally juried media art exhibition, a
peer reviewed academic conference and various invited exhibitions, workshops
and partner events. Hosting ISEA 2008 represents both an incredible
opportunity for Singapore team to define, shape and affect media and
cultural developments in Singapore, as well as in the Asian region and
beyond. It seeks to include as many culturally diverse perspectives from the
Asian region to encourage cross-cultural dialogues on the possibilities and
opportunities of media technologies globally. http://www.isea2008.org

Appel à participation : Call for Poster Presentations - Urban Screens Melbourne 08, Australia.

Call for Poster Presentations - Urban Screens Melbourne 08

*************************************************************
Urban Screens Melbourne 08
Conference “mobile publics” 3 – 5 October 2008
Multimedia exhibition 3 – 8 October 2008
http://www.urbanscreens08.net

EXTENDED Deadline for submission: 31st May 2008

*************************************************************

Urban Screens Melbourne 08 is the third, ground-breaking international conference and multimedia exhibition in a series of worldwide events around the redefinition of a growing digital infrastructure of moving images in public space. It will mark the official launch of the International Urban Screens Association and will take place 3.-8. October at Federation Square, Melbourne. Federation Square is a unique cultural and community oriented multimedia precinct, centred around a significant 38m2 public LED screen complemented with other digital elements.

CALL FOR POSTERS ********************

Urban Screens Melbourne 08 is currently looking for researches to present posters on the latest development in the interdisciplinary field of Urban Screens. The poster presentations will be integrated in the overall Urban Screens Melbourne 08 event structure. You will be able to showcase your project to a public audience and professionals and stakeholders with distinctive interests in media and public space, in attendance at our conference “USM08 -Mobile Publics”.
http://www.urbanscreens08.net/conference-2008

The poster presentations provide a forum for authors to present their work in an informal and interactive setting. To bridge the Conference and the Multimedia Exhibition we are looking for proposals for posters and experimental presentations in public space. All accepted posters will be displayed in an exhibition in the public Atrium precinct, next to the conference hall, viewable for all conference attendees and the general public. The conference audience will be gathering around the A1 posters during the poster session to engage with the author.

Urban Screens 08 posters are ideal for presenting speculative, late-breaking results of ongoing research projects; for drawing important conclusions from practical experiments; for giving an introduction to innovative works or new practical design applications, and reporting on cutting edge technologies and content management systems currently in development.

EXPERIMENTAL SKYPE SESSIONS

Besides the poster exhibition, eight submissions will be additionally shown in an experimental presentation on the four outdoor I-sites around Federation Square. These I-sites offer authors from abroad the possibility to present remotely via scheduled Skype sessions whilst the audience gathers in small groups around the terminals. A time schedule for these digital presentations of 15 minutes will be placed on the chosen posters of the exhibition.

This I-hub presentation should be delivered using Adobe Flash or Powerpoint. For remote presentations, the portrait format screen will be split in two half sections, the top one for the presentation, the other for the life image of the presenter. You will be able to remotely control the presentation.

MAIN CRITERIA

Posters are aimed at presenting the latest development in this interdisciplinary field of Urban Screens. We are open to a wide range of issues around this idea about the integration of digital moving images in outdoor public spaces and using this new integrated digital layer of the city for contributing to a lively urban society.
