Formation : MFA in Photography program at The Ohio State University, Usa.

Application deadline for all material for the MFA in Photography
program at The Ohio State University is January 10, 2008. (Must
arrive in the art office by January 10th) http://art.osu.edu/

The Ohio State University
The Ohio State University is one of the nation's largest, most
comprehensive universities. The Columbus campus enrolls
approximately 57,000 students, 3,600 of whom are international
students representing more than 100 countries. Ohio State offers
approximately 11,700 courses in over one hundred departments,
including graduate programs in virtually every profession.

Information Photography Area
Photography has a long tradition at The Ohio State University,
dating back to the 1880's, when it offered one of the first courses
in the medium. The photography area is committed to a
continuous exploration and redefinition of what it means to use
photography as an art endeavor.

Part of the strength of our program comes from being part of a
very large university community; we encourage cross-fertilization,
not only with other areas in the art department but also with areas
outside the department.

Students complement studio practice with a historical and
theoretical understanding of the medium and to that end we offer
History and Theory classes within the photography area as well as
outside the department, including offerings from the History of Art
Department and from Art Education which offers several courses
about the critical process of writing and talking about images.

studios for graduate students in Photography.

The Fine Arts Library houses the Rinhart Collection of
daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, and 19th-century paper
prints, as well as a collection of 20th-century prints. The library
also houses over 6000 photographic titles, which constitutes one
of the top five university collections in the country.

In addition, photography students have access to extensive
Computer facilities for digital imaging and manipulation such as
the state of the art Fergus-Gilmore Computer Studio (FGCS) which
features high-end archival inject printers, high resolution glassless
slide scanners, film burner for 35 MM and 4x4 film sizes and
colormatch software. The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts
and Design (ACCAD), and numerous other University computer labs
are also available to graduate students in Photography.

Resources
As members of the University community, students in the
Department of Art have the opportunity to draw on a wide variety
of resources that may be pertinent to their work. The University
Fine Arts Library holds over 40,000 volumes. Ohio State's
Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design is known
internationally as one of the top centers for graduate students
focused in animation and 3D modeling. The History of Art
Department has a comprehensive slide and print collection of more
than 450,000 items. The Wexner Center for the Arts presents

Master of Fine Arts Degree Requirements
The M.F.A. degree is a two-year program, or a minimum of six
quarters, designed to permit a concentrated effort in a student's
field of specialization. The degree is widely recognized as a
terminal degree for college teaching. The M.F.A. permits a wide
range of options, and all hours must be graduate level.
1. A minimum of 40 credit hours in the major studio field.
A maximum of 18 thesis credit hours (generally two to five credit
hours are recommended), four graduate seminar hours (895), plus
two additional seminar hours (896) required for GTAs (can be
credited toward major studio requirements).
2. A minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 graduate credit
hours in studio elective, not limited to one studio discipline.
Examples: Department of Art Studio, Dance, Music, Theatre and
Design.
3. A minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 graduate credit
hours in the humanities. Examples: History of Art, Philosophy,
International Studies, Creative Writing, Criticism.

Financial Assistance
An average of 90% of the enrolled studio art graduate students
receive Graduate Teaching Assistantships or University Fellowships.
The GTA receives a stipend for nine months of service; a Fellow is
compensated for 12 months of study. Both receive a full waiver of
tuition. A competitive University Fellowship Program provides
grants for first year graduate applicants, including special
fellowships for under-represented students.
