Overview
Artists Alliance, Inc./Alianza de Artistas (AAI), a community based nonprofit organization composed of artists from a broad spectrum of national and artistic backgrounds, is pleased to announce two new sessions for our Lower East Side Rotating Studio Program (LES-RSP/07) at 107 Suffolk Street. Eight artists will be invited to participate in the Rotating Studio Program, located in the vibrant and historically significant multicultural neighborhood of the Lower East Side in Lower Manhattan. The studios are located within the former PS 160, which has been converted into a vital cultural center.Selected artists will have the opportunity to interact and engage with the professional resident visual artists who currently work in the cultural center. This program underscores AAI's mission to support the careers of emerging and mid-career artists working in all fields as well as hardworking artists who fall outside the system. It also addresses issues about the scarcity of space for the production and presentation of works of art. Lack of workspace threatens the very core of cultural life in New York City.Application Deadline: March 15, 2007

What the residency offers:

-Six-month long residency. 4 artists for Session 1: June thru Nov/07; 4
artists for Session 2: Dec thru May/08

-All four studios are located within one large former classroom. Each Studio space is approximately 170 sq ft.-Each studio is partitioned without a door. These studios are provided to the artists at no cost. A small stipend is available. (Photos of the studios are available at http://www.aai-nyc.org/)

-Access to the studios 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

-Opportunities to present works to curators, critics, arts professionals, and the general public.

-AAI organizes public programs during year and resident artists will be included in all events.

-Artists retain proprietary rights to all work created while in residence.

Important Note: There is no elevator in the building. All materials must be carried up to the studios and removed at the end of the residency.

Requirements: This program is open to emerging, mid-career and hard-working artists who fall outside the system. All disciplines including painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation and computer arts will be accepted. Artists must be living within a reasonable distance from the studios during the residency term. There is absolutely no live space available. Students currently enrolled in a college or university program are not eligible to apply. AAI reserves the right to distribute video footage and reproduce images from the studios and of works produced in residence for publicity purposes connected with the Studio Program Workspace and for publication including the AAI website. (Please review contract requirements for participation in the Studio Program. Available at /http://www.aai- http://nyc.org/ nyc.org AAI reserves the right to suspend residency privileges to artists who do not appropriately use the studio environment.

The selection process:Eight artists in total will be selected by a panel of arts professionals, artists, and an AAI member. Each year new panelists are selected. Please visit our website for a list of previous panelists.

Decisions are based on artistic merit, career stage and proposed
projects or ideas (if your project or idea relates to the Lower East
Side or Lower Manhattan, please include this in your text). Work must
not distract or obstruct other residents in the studio or other
building tenants nor require heavy machinery, noisy equipment, major
construction or toxic materials. All residents must comply with fire
regulations and standard safety procedures.
