THE COLLEGE:
Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts is the largest regionally accredited, independent school of art and design in the western United States. Noted for the interdisciplinary nature and breadth of its programs, the college offers studies in eighteen majors in the areas of fine arts, architecture, design, and writing. The college confers the bachelor of architecture, bachelor of arts, bachelor of fine arts, master of architecture, master of arts, and master of fine arts degrees. With campuses in San Francisco and Oakland, California College of the Arts currently enrolls fifteen hundred full-time students.

POSITION SUMMARY: Under direction of the Wattis Institute Director, the Assistant Curator is responsible for assisting with the planning and development of exhibitions and public programs for the Wattis Institute

REPORTS TO: Director of the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts

DEPARTMENT: Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Assists the Institute Director in developing long-term exhibition & public programming objectives.
• Will provide curatorial assistance on large and small-scale interdisciplinary exhibitions of art, architecture, and various fields of design.
• Works with the Director, researches and develops exhibition concepts and themes.
• Works with various Institute and CCA staff to co-ordinate shipping, exhibition design and publications; secure loans; invite artists; plan publicity, marketing, fundraising and outreach.
• Writes exhibition didactic materials including wall texts, brochures, and catalogs.
• Works with Institute Director in planning related travel and travel budget.
• Works with the Director, researches and develops public programming in the form of public lectures, panels, symposia, film series, performances, workshops in support of exhibitions and occasionally as stand alone events.
• Works with Institute staff to co-ordinate artists/designer visits, fees, travel, lodging, hosting, necessary equipment, and other matters as need arise.
• Works closely with faculty to foster curricular integration of Institute exhibitions and programs
• Assists with Capp Street residents in the fulfillment of Capp Street residency objectives particularly the creation of new artwork.
• Works with Institute CCA staff in residency planning publicity and marketing, fundraising, exhibition design and outreach. Writes residency didactic materials including wall texts, brochures, and catalogs.
• Works as needed with the Institute Director, the CCA Advancement Department and President’s Office in the cultivation of Institute community of supporters and donors. Works with Advancement Department and Institute Deputy Director in the development of fundraising events.
• Will perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Familiarity with international contemporary art, architecture and/or design imperative. Experience in museum or gallery environment a must. Must have experience in organizing exhibitions publications, budget management. Excellent spoken and written communication skills required. Ability to work under pressure in collaboration with others in a team environment. Must be well organized with a proactive approach. Apple proficiency needed. An advanced degree in art, architecture or design history preferred. Familiarity with and ability to apply technological innovations to museum operations with strong computer skills in MS Word and Excel. Experience using and supporting Datatel Colleague or similar ERP software preferred.

SALARY: Starting salary $45,000/annual, and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
